Listen Better

For the past week… I’ve been on a major Tom Moulton kick…

I’ve believe it started listening to The O’Jays “Backstabbers”… original version… while grooving, I recalled an extended version I had heard some point in the past… and went searching… not truly sure if it was imagination or reality…

It was reality… the extended version was done by the Father of the Remix… Thomas Jerome Moulton… aka the brother in the picture above…

After playing… see: jamming to… the remix version… I went on a Tom Moulton binge over the weekend…

This morning, after watching an interview he gave about his “Tom Moulton’s Philly Re-Grooved” albums… a song by Finishing Touch, a group I had no clue about… was highlighted… Tom’s partner in the project stated it had a sound varying from the rest of the disco soul album… more of a funk soul groove… with interest piqued… I rushed to YouTube and tracked down “Don’t Put Me Down”…

I hope you enjoy it… as much as did…

Friday… look out for a 5 Things: My Favorite Tom Moulton Remixes At This Moment…

If you haven’t copped the latest from Big K.R.I.T…. please do so, immediately… his official* debut album was released last week and it certainly lives up to the hype… Below is a 10-minute documentary on the making of the album… Featuring footage of beatmaking, rehearsals, performances… and a nice segment on his collaboration with B.B. King… Enjoy!

Rest & (MANY) Thanks: Chuck Brown, DC’s Constant & Saint

17 May 2012

Easily identifiable as “Chuck…” but it sounded so much better to say “Chuck Brown…” Wednesday, May 16th, 2012… Washington, DC lost our constant… and gained a saint… The Constant From the mid-sixties to the Spring of 2012… there was one thing for certain in the District… you could find a spot to “go see Chuck…” […]

Rest & Thanks: Happy James Brown Day!

3 May 2012

“So now ladies and gentlemen it is star time, are you ready for star time?” Before there was MJ… there was JB… the baddest man on the planet… let alone show business… None like him before… none like him soon to come… My fandom and appreciation for the gifts he left this world cannot be […]

Phonte’s ” The Life of Kings” Video feat. Evidence & Big K.R.I.T.

25 April 2012

Scream if you love Hip Hop… These days there are very few times I check for music videos… very… few… like… damn near never… Fortunately, there are cats out there fighting the good fight and producing what my musically elitist ass considers “good hip hop”… Phonte’s “The Life of Kings” video embodies all that is […]

Rest & Thanks: Happy Marvin Gaye Day!

2 April 2012

Celebrate the life of a soulful one… Earlier this year, a post celebrating the life and music of J Dilla revealed the Egg Album Artwork series by ŏn.us.tees artist, Gede… featuring a handful of my favorite artists interpreted as the ŏn.us.tees Egg mascots… The album artwork series continues with Marvin’s “Let’s Get It On”… The […]

Song of the Day: Rick James “Mr. Policeman”

22 March 2012

…it wasn’t a cop in Trayvon’s case, but it was certainly the mentality… While jamming to the Street Songs album by Rick James on the way to work…  “Mr. Policeman” came on and instantly I thought the death of Trayvon Martin… a song written over 30 years ago still rings true… Hey Mr. Policeman I’ve seen […]

Song of the Day: Zebra Katz feat. Njena Redd Foxxx “Ima Read’”

16 March 2012

Best thing I’ve seen and heard in a couple of weeks now… Typically, the content of this song wouldn’t be applicable for the Do Better Movement… Especially, following a post defending the KONY2012 movement…  However, the simplicity of the track, the tone and lyrics of the song has caused me to chair-bop to this on […]
