Rest & (MANY) Thanks: Chuck Brown, DC’s Constant & Saint

by dre of onustees.com on 17 May 2012

Easily identifiable as “Chuck…” but it sounded so much better to say “Chuck Brown…”

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012… Washington, DC lost our constant… and gained a saint…

The Constant

From the mid-sixties to the Spring of 2012… there was one thing for certain in the District… you could find a spot to “go see Chuck…” Whether it was with “Los Latinos”, where the foundation of the Go-Go sound was explored, incorporating funk rhythms with Latin percussive grooves… or if it was with The Soul Searchers… a funk dominated band that would later be mined for the backbone of an entirely new sound, Hip Hop… or when they fully established their sound as the leading Go-Go band and became “Chuck Brown & Soul Searchers…”

One thing remained… DC’s own Desmond Hume (for my Lost people) was present and constant… DC’s had Marion Barry… he soared initially… then “the bitch set me up…” Redskins are still claimed… but ever since Snyder took over… things ain’t been the same. The Bullets/Wizards… well, thanks Gilbert. However, nothing has remained unceasing, steadfast and faithful as the pocket groove & familiar saxophone refrain from Chuck Brown and his band…

If you’ve read this blog before… or know me beyond the blog… there are 2 major things I cherish… my relationship with Pops… and great music, typically it’s music from the time before yesterday… as I thought about the passing of the legend… I recalled a conversation I had with my Pops this past Mother’s Day… he asked if I knew Chuck was in the hospital… in a manner that suggested “Chuck” was in our family, which he was to each and every DC native… I told him I was aware but had my doubts he’d recover… We both agreed that suffering from pneumonia at that age… compacted with the fact he was at John Hopkins… the outcome looked grim… at that moment, I informed him I hoped DC would throw a major Go-Go ChuckFest at RFK… bringing out all the local bands and artists nationwide that revered him for a day-long concert… without hesitation my father of 61 years of age replied… “I’d go.” …that’s when I realized Chuck was our constant…

I grew up listening to Miles… P-Funk… Sly… Isaac… wrote pre-school reports on my favorite artist, Dexter Gordon, who, at age 6, I’ve gone to see at Fort Dupont with Pops… and cried when he left the stage and wiped tears away when Pops promised me we’d return to see him the next day… which he did…  Pops & I have taken a number of road trips down 95 South singing to Motown… jamming to Stax… and admiring Carmen McRae… Pops even appreciated some of the artists I would grow up to enjoy… often he’d ask for a mix of Tupac’s best… or recognize the hustle and business acumen of Shawn Carter… and once I saw the glimmer of pride in his eye when I sampled Sam Cooke’s “Twistin’ The Night Away” during my early pursuits of beatmaking apart of School of Beats (click if you dare… song is “The Co-Op… and judge not… lol.) Yet… with all those acts from his youth and mine… very few would provide each the same experiences… I could never have the feeling of witnessing the Mothership drop from above and Starchild step out with his Bop Gun in tow… nor would he understand how Jay-Z could command a crowd by simply standing dead center stage reciting rap lines with minimal movement… but that was just how Hov did it… then again… he’d probably compare it to Miles capturing an audience double the number of Jay-Z’s, while playing trumpet with his back to them… in the end… however, it was never the same person… the same sound… the same experience…

But with Chuck it was different… and by different… the same…

My father has the same feelings and experiences jamming to Chuck & The Soul Searchers as I do… We both know what it feels like to see Chuck walk on stage and greet the audience in that calm-cool-collected DC baritone… We both know what was about to go down when the drummer kicked off at the top… followed by the chords from the brother on the keys… along with the repetitive striking of the cowbell… the Soul Searching pocket groove… then “keep what you got until you get what you need ya’ll…” We both know… that once Chuck received the bridge… it was time to bust loose… We both have tried to keep our bop cool enough to attract the DC honeys while “Chuck & nem” was cranking… We both have failed at that endeavor and jammed to a sweaty outcome…

Decades apart… different eras… varying styles…  altered slang… one thing remained… we both have “gon’ to see Chuck…”

The Saint

I don’t claim to be a religious person… far from it… I try to live life with a pretty damn good moral code set forth by Lord Pops Taylor… I say that to explain that I have a basic (highly assumed) notion of how Sainthood is attained…

I’d imagine that, in their earthly selves, saints had to impact a number of people and provide blessings to those who sought them out… Chuck’s cultural impact on DC is without question… I don’t believe you can be born within the city limits and the neighboring areas and NOT recognize the Legend of Chuck Brown… (It’s Redskins… Mumbo Sauce… Chuck…)

As far as the blessings… For visiting artists… you weren’t REALLY appreciated by DC unless Chuck showed up at your concert… I can’t keep count of how many times Chuck has appeared with his sidekick “Blondie” (his guitar) and graced the crowd… Each and every time the crowd would erupt as if we’d all won the mega-millions (by the way, Chuck’s DC Lottery promo was a JAM!!!) … and I’m talking we all would get 15M each… that type of elation… For the artist, it was always a risky move to bring him out… It was best to do so at the beginning or end of the show… If you brought the Legend out in the middle the set… the remaining time folks would just want to hear that go-go feeling again… but if you let him open the urge would subside and focus returned to the main attraction… the Win/Win would be to bring him on at the end… for two reasons… 1, the entire time we’re all listening to you thinking… “I wonder if they’re going to bring out Chuck…” 2, when you DO bring him out… it’s usually to crank to your best song… which simply puts everyone over the top on 10… and closes the venue with the chants of “Wind Me Up, Chuck!!!” …and he couldn’t help but do so… (For the record… Jill Scott was the best at “bringing out Chuck”…)

Another aspect of Sainthood… assuming here… is revisiting the entire body work… with the passing of the 75 year old of legend… I hope it’s revealed that he was not only the founding father of Go-Go… but an A+ musician… whether it was Funk, R&B or Soul… Chuck could do it… and did it… The Soul Searchers “Blow Your Whistle” embodies the drive and rhythm that rivals sounds of that time… Ohio Players, L.T.D., Kool & The Gang, etc… “We The People” could have easily been placed on a Sly Stone album… and this may be blasphemy but their version of James’ “Think”… is well… pretty damn close to out-doing the Godfather of Soul…

Lasting mark… Saints must leave something behind that will remain for many moons… decades… centuries… yet again, I’m assuming here… Aside from his ability to remake songs from varying genres… Blues… Soul… Jazz… Cartoon Themes… “Run Joe”“Playing Your Game” “It Don’t Mean A Thing”“Woody Woodpecker”… respectively… I think the biggest miracle* of Chuck Brown’s career is being apart of the Soul Searchers and present when the drumbreak on “Ashley’s Roachclip” hit… although it was Kenneth Scoggins on the drums… the mere fact that Chuck was apart of a drumloop that has been used by everyone from LL Cool J… Eric B & Rakim… Dr. Dre… even Duran Duran & Milli Vanilli… only adds to his legend… (there’s also the fact that the Soul Searchers song “1993″ was used in some rap interlude… that I’ve been wracking my brain trying to remember… help if you can… it’s around the :50 sec mark… “will the rain and thunder clean* the world for me…”)

…in the end, I know 2 things…

Chuck Brown will forever be in the hearts and spirit of the Nation’s Capital…

…our Constant…

…our Saint.

5 Things: Thoughts on Obama’s Same-Sex Marriage Evolution

by dre of onustees.com on 10 May 2012

“…see what had happened was…”

May 9th , 2012… Barack Obama stepped up to the plate and did what he’s done repeatedly during his 1st term as President of the United States… Shifted the course of a nation and put forth an ideal that has long been push aside… an endorsement for same-sex marriage.

Here are my 5 thoughts on his recent declaration…

  1. If true… I’m surprised that he recently came to this belief… I assumed a man with his background and make-up would be on the forefront of this debate… and his silence was due to playing the political game… Yesterday on Facebook, I posted: “I applaud Barack for his statement on same-sex marriage… but the REAL statement should have been… “Of course I’m cool with gay marriage… but dammit, I got a good thing going here at 1600… I couldn’t just come out with it, I’m trying to get 4 more years… they clockin’ me, pimpin.”"
  2. St. Barry, has a nice ring to it… another post made yesterday on Facebook: “…once he evolves* his stance on marijuana… he just might supplant Frederick Douglass for the #1 spot as “The Baddest Man to Ever Walk the Planet”… and if he follows that up with “…now on the subject of the 40 acres and said mule…” …I will personally travel to Vatican City and submit his application for Sainthood…
  3. Joe Biden the Food Taster… when Obama picked Biden as his running mate… I thought it was a good pick because he was a familiar White guy… who’d be more confrontational than Barry… thus, making the President more appealing to majority  voters… (aka limiting the fear of the angry Black male) …but now I see the genius that is Joe Biden… he’s the food taster… the culture thermometer… the political anemometer… all the gaffes and blunders are intentional… his main purpose is to go out and warm the crowd up and report back… Sunday, when Biden stated, “I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And quite frankly, I don’t see much of a distinction — beyond that.” That wasn’t Biden going “Biden”… That was the Vice President doing some food-tasting… and when the backlash wasn’t fervent (or kill him…) and the GOP was too distracted to harp on the statement… It was the perfect time for the main act… Hopefully, this weekend Brother Joe goes on Face The Nation and proclaims his affinity for smoking the good stuff and rocking on.us.tees
  4. Really, at this point anyone who’s against Gay marriage… also, must admit they believe in the following… the Boogieman, the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, stepping on cracks will break your mother’s back, saying Candyman 5 times in a mirror will spawn a one-armed Black man to appear and that Rocky Marciano was the greatest boxer of all-time.
  5. Felt like the 1st time a President has said anything true… I’m not naive enough to believe this didn’t have any political connotations… everything he says does so… this will be a large topic in the upcoming election… however, it felt like it was an “off-the-record”… how I really feel statement… ignoring the political backlash… the #imjustsayin of Presidential opinions… (Yes, I know that is not the case… it was a calculated move to separate himself form lump lump Romney… who’s already stated he’s not budging from his anti Gay marriage stance….)

Rest & Thanks: Happy James Brown Day!

by dre of onustees.com on 3 May 2012

“So now ladies and gentlemen it is star time, are you ready for star time?”

Before there was MJ… there was JB… the baddest man on the planet… let alone show business…

None like him before… none like him soon to come…

My fandom and appreciation for the gifts he left this world cannot be contained in words… and certainly not a blog post…

I’ll try my best to convey in a few selections of James Brown’s lesser known hits…

Honky Tonk (Parts 1 & 2)

This song immediately takes me back to Saturday morning big breakfasts that Pop’s would whip up…  Often I’d wake up from dream where the voices in the beginning of the song crept in… “Honky Tonk, Honky Tonk, Honky Tonk!!!” …once the guitar began I’d wake up knowing it was time tackle the day… Brush my teeth… head to the table, chow down on some cheese eggs and turkey bacon… all the while bobbing my head…

Why Does Everything Happen To Me? (Live at the Apollo)

One of my Top 5  James Brown experiences only lasts for about a minute or so… and isn’t the original version of a song… On his  “Live at the Apollo” album, he performs a medley book-ended by the popular “Please Please Please”… within that performance is a rendition of “Why Does Everything Happen to Me?” …I’m not sure if it’s the lead up… the horn section… the way the drummer ends each 4th measure… the BB King-esque guitar playing… or the sincerity of his voice… but that combination and it’s brevity has made it one of my favorite JB moments… Here’s a direct link to the part of the song…

…enjoy the entire song… or skip to 3:35…

Bring It Up

This is just a great song… as kid it was simply fun to snap, clap, tap, dance and any other move I could concoct as this played through the house… Later, I would be able to identify the New Orleans “Second Line” bop it had to it… Much later, I would realize what Hipster Avenue meant…

People Get Up and Drive Your Funky Soul

I discovered this song later in life… During my time as a dabbler in beatmaking… While crate digging I stumbled upon the soundtrack for “Slaughter’s Big Rip-Off” composed entirely by James… It’s complete with a “funky good time” but nothing on there tops “Drive Your Funky Soul”… Like many of his other songs… It meshes a theme of uplifting while keeping your foot tapping… More recently, I found the full version on his Motherlode album that features the legendary JB count in and the extended groove of The J.B.’s… (Why car companies haven’t used it in an ad… I do not know…)

The Man In The Glass

Another find during my create digging for James era… was the album “Soul On Top”… released in 1970… today, this would be like Coldplay producing an album for Lil Wayne… and it actually sounded great… Jazz saxophonist, Oliver Nelson arranged several of Brown’s hits and some covers with his orchestra… one of the results was “The Man In The Glass”… I was immediately surprised, shocked, amazed and thrilled…

There are plenty of others… but those are just a few of my favorite James Brown experiences…

I’m sure you have many of your own…

Go play some James today,

- dre’

P.S. – DC area folks, if you’re looking to hear some James on a Friday night… check out DJ Cuzzin B’s tribute show @ Fever, 816 H ST NE…

Doing It Wrong: Joel Ward’s Goal Nets Hate

by dre of onustees.com on 26 April 2012

*enter Classic Cash Money rap line about Ice*

Initially, I was going to use “tell me what kinda, nigga got ice that’ll BLING!, blind ya…” and then “got so much ice you can skate on a nigga…” popped in my head… both lines from B.G.’s classic “Bling Bling” coined by one, Mr. Lil Wayne…

However, I realized that it would cloud the following text with the use of the word “nigga”… and almost thought of excluding it from the post…

Yet, it wouldn’t be true… solely to harp on the racist rants of bitter Boston fans… who have chosen to take to Twitter, Facebook and other social mediums to express discontent of a Black hockey player winning Game 7 of a 1st round match in the NHL playoffs…

Tale of Two Cities…

On the eve of the return of Redskin’s Glory (we hope with the drafting of Robert Griffin, III…) I was out celebrating a close friend’s birthday… the chosen place for the party is much like the Bull & Finch Pub in Boston, commonly known as Cheers… Everyone there pretty much knows each other… and it’s expected that everyone will return each Wednesday from 6pm until… to throw back libations, catch up, plan for the weekend, shit talk, laugh, etc…

I wouldn’t be considered a regular on Wednesdays… but what makes this place great is that once you step in… after the initial… “Hey! it’s YOU!!!” “Wow, you’re out with us tonight?” “Glad to see you here, been awhile…” is done… you pretty much feel like a regular… to use a colloquialism… One feels like they’re with “ya niggas…” Keyword: in that phrase isn’t “niggas”… it’s “ya” or “your”… Those folks who smiled when you stepped in the bar… are YOUR people… your kinship… you have history, culture and just as important a common vernacular…

Which is one reason why… I love my niggas.

Like most bars, this one has HDTVs plastered along the walls… on every other TV was Game 7 of the Bruins/Caps series… normally, hockey doesn’t get much play in this bar… but it’s DC… it’s the Caps… it’s the playoffs… it gets play that night… So, imagine the surprise of the predominantly Black attendees when Joel Ward scored the winning goal! His 1st goal… defeating the defending champions in THEIR home… for those who were clued in… excitement was all about… not Barack Obama wins the presidency excitement… but a sense of pride nonetheless… It was our brother… our reflection… our culture… our nigga… getting mobbed by teammates on the ice…

It’s not too often a group of Whites jumping on a Black man is a good thing…

Sadly, whenever something grand & Black happens in a mainstream (majority) genre the original strain of the term “nigga” is spewed… Primarily, from ignorant individuals too cowardly to profess their true feelings consistently… Only revealing when something near and dear to them is “threatened”… Baseball, Voting, Education, White Women, Stand Your Ground, etc…

This time it was hockey… the last frontier for Black exploration in America’s Top Four sports… Basketball has long been conquered… Football, is all but complete… once the new QB Type takes over… (see: Vick, Newton, Griffin III) that sport will be Black… Baseball, once on our trajectory… has been gifted to the good brothers of Cuba, Dominican Republic and other Latin American nations…

Hockey… has yet to be infiltrated… but once that puck went into the back of the net during OT of the Caps/ Bruins game… those watching the gate (yes, gate… not game…) knew what was coming… “them”… and whenever “them” gets too close to what they hold dear… “them” goes from “Black” to their red alert term “Nigger”…

“Nigger” the Paul Revere of the Standard American English… It’s the bullhorn that rounds the troops… It alerts them of pending “danger”… Encroachment of territory… The audacity of being equal and threat of being greater… It’s their Nuke… The end-all, be-all… The word that strikes fear in the souls of the Negro… the word that leads us to march for it’s abolishment… and have debates with media frontman and dance around with the term “N-Word”… as if magically, “N-word” doesn’t automatically render NIGGER in your mind…

I, however, love the term… it’s a beacon of ignorance… the smoke from fires within enemy camps… readily identifying themselves and location… and most importantly, let’s me know…

They’re not my niggas.
